Funded by The Duke Endowment, the B.N. Duke Scholarship covers full tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees for a total of eight semesters. In addition, the scholarship provides stipends for two summer experiences that allow scholars to enhance their personal and academic development. The first summer takes students back from whence they came through a service internship in North or South Carolina. The second summer expands their knowledge and awareness of other cultures and communities by taking them outside the United States. When summer enhancements are included, the full value of the scholarship exceeds $250,000 over eight semesters.

Benefits
In addition to funding a Duke education, the scholarship program offers a variety of opportunities to grow and develop as a leader and civically-engaged citizen. Community Circles bring everyone together on a monthly basis centered on a specific topic or invited guest. Retreats challenge students to reflect on how to better live their values and turn ideas into reality, looking ahead with intention towards the academic year as well as summer experiences. Collaboration among scholars results in a wide range of student initiatives from community service projects to new campus organizations. In addition to providing advising and networking for these initiatives, the B.N. Duke Scholars Program often provides funds to support students embarking on new projects or strengthening existing organizations. Throughout, scholars receive individual, one-on-one mentoring from program staff to help them reach their full potential.
Expectations
We believe that community is built on the engagement of ALL its participants; that all voices are needed in a diverse community to make us – individually and together – all that we might become. Thus, we expect active and engaged participation from our B.N. Duke scholars. Being a scholar is both a privilege and a responsibility and we seek students who desire to be a part of such a community.
