Benjamin N. Duke Scholars Program

"Choosing to come to Duke and be a B.N. Duke Scholar had everything to do with choosing the corner where the people would support us the most zealously, where we could explode in pursuit of our passions, and where opportunities were not scarce." -Stesha Doku, Hometown: Charlotte, NC

The best and brightest students from North and South Carolina. A lifelong community of scholars that feels like family.  A commitment to the development of leadership skills and acts of service on campus and beyond. The Benjamin N. Duke Scholarship brings creative student-leaders of the Carolinas to one of the most vibrant universities in the country, where real world problems are tackled with an innovative and interdisciplinary approach. Where faculty, research and discovery are readily accessilbe to every student. And, where students are challenged, and then given the resources, to reach their full potential, to achieve their very best.

On top of this amazing Duke education, B.N. Duke scholars join a program intent on:

·        Guiding and fostering their growth as leaders

·        Developing an informed and empathetic understanding of “the common good”

·        Nurturing their commitment to selfless service

·        Inspiring intentional and imaginative problem-solving skills

·        Encouraging understanding of differences represented in the Duke community and beyond

·        Cultivating a deeper appreciation of the Carolinas

Scholars in our program are striving to make a difference in their world, in their own unique way. The goal of the program is to help them accomplish this through the support of their peers, the guidance and mentoring of the staff, and the consistent encouragement from the entire community to stretch and grow beyond what even they thought possible.

Our B.N. Duke rising Juniors and Seniors are now venturing out to far away lands, stepping outside their comfort zones by immersing themselves in other cultures. They’ve designed their own projects, which allow them to serve others and pursue something for which they have a passion. This exercise in self development will enhance their understanding of the world.

Our rising Sophomores are embarking on a journey to serve the Carolina community, each one a volunteer intern for a non-profit, public or human service agency in South Carolina, intent on serving the common good. They’ll spend nine weeks living together and strengthening the bonds they developed during their first year at Duke.
